Also saw the fresh, black feces of an animal (perhaps a ferret: there are ferrets living on the campus) on a path in the garden

Little Egret  About 20, in a group lined up all across the river just downstream from a shallow waterfall. Usually Little Egrets are solitary, but I have seen such groups in previous years in this river in this season.

Black-headed Gull  12 (My first sighting of them this winter)
